  • Convincing Someone to Blog

    I have a friend with whom I regularly chat via IM. We often talk about numerous interesting topics and he often has a lot to say about them. He’s also shown an interest in blogging and interacting with the blogging community…

    Only he won’t blog.

    I’ve tried to convince him, but he says he doesn’t see himself blogging right now. He says he doesn’t have enough confidence with his writing and he thinks his blogs won’t be good enough. He also says he associates bad memories with writing. And he thinks he won’t have very much or enough to say. He says that he’ll maybe write ten blog entries and then run out of topics and start repeating himself.

    Generally he just doesn’t seem to think he’d be able to do a good job with his blog compared to the blogs of other.  And he doesn’t feel comfortable with sharing his writing with the public.

    It’s of course up to him whether he blogs and I’m not trying to force him into doing anything he doesn’t want to do. But I told him that I thought he’d make an excellent blogger just based on our conversations and that his entries would be very interesting to other bloggers out there. And I told him that it might be that blogging might help him to build more confidence in his writing, giving him more experience and also that I thought that there would probably be a lot of bloggers out there that if they read his blog would probably be able to relate to him. And I told him that he might make some friends through blogging as I have.

    Still he does not blog. Maybe he will one day. Maybe not. I don’t know. But right now he doesn’t seem like he’s going to blog despite my urging.

    So I was just wondering, do any of you know anyone like that? Have you ever convinced anyone to start a blog? If so, how did you convince them? Is there anyone you know who never blogs but who you think would make an excellent blogger?

    Hmmm… come to think of it I’ve actually got a lot of friends who I wish would blog or I wish would blog more often. Maybe I’m just overly obsessed with blogging.

    Eh to each his own I guess, but I think it’s sad. The world would benefit from having his thoughts immortalized in blogging form. A pity he doesn’t see that himself!

  • You can’t make a person improve themselves. That has to come from within.

    You could, potentially, help him by immortalizing his thoughts for him, on your own blog. Maybe if you shared what he has to say with the world, and the world gives him some good feedback, he’ll give it another thought.

  • The thing with blogging is that many people see it as taboo…still…which is also sad because they are missing out on the benefits a blog can bring. That could be a secret reason as to why he doesn’t want to blog.

  • @mama_jess - I’m less concerned with him improving himself and more with him improving us with his wisdom .  Sharing some of his thoughts on my blog is a good idea, Thanks! I’ll run that by him.

    @LydJaGillers - Good point. I hope that’s not the reason though. He certainly didn’t give any indication that thta might have anything to do with it.

  • I have a friend who would also be great at blogging and think it would help her to get her thoughts out, but she won’t do it either. She has myspace and facebook, but still won’t blog. I think some people are just scared to get started (I was) and need a nudge or two in the right direction to get them blogging…

  • you know, my friend conviced me to start bloging because he said i would learn a lot about myself and life by both reading blogs and writing and getting comments.  I think its rediculous how your friend wont blog because he feels his writting skills are bad.  I dont give a damn about my skills, writting this down helps me cope with everyday hard life, school, and work.  Plus i do this to learn any new perspective that i can.  Just please, your friend needs to start xanga, he doesnt have to update every day, he ccan even be a bit redundant.

  • maybe he does blog, but keeps it private or protected?

  • You don’t have to be a good writer to blog. He can just do it for fun and then maybe take it more seriously later! He will get better in time and he’ll get more used to it.

  • @LeadMyWay - I’m the same way. I learn so much about myself from blogging that I couldn’t imagine not having it. It keeps me sane. But I guess not everybody is like that and if you haven’t experienced it, how would you know?

    @angrylilgurl - I doubt it because I mentioned that he could keep his blog protected and/or private but he didn’t seem interested in that.

    @buckeyegirl31 - :) That’s what I’m trying to do! :nudge: :nudge:

    @muzical_writer735 - I agree!
