  • Xanga Feature Suggestion: Blog Replies

Xanga, more than any other blogging or social networking site I think revolves around the “comment”. You get credits for comments. You cross advertise through comments. You get eprops usually through comments. You leave minis on comments.  Comments are the measure through which people judge how popular a blog entry is or how interested they might be in reading it.

For many, Xanga is basically all about the comments. It’s not uncommon for a user to spend more time commenting on other people’s blogs than they do writing their own!  This is very different from a lot of other blogging sites where comments are sort of incidental and people barely use them. In a way, Xanga feels more like a big gigantic Forum than it does a blogging site. And that also leads to the sense of closeness between users that permeates Xanga. It’s something very much akin to what you see in a lot of online forum communities.

This is why, any features that enhance the commenting capacity of users can create great dividends for the community. These features are empowering for users. They encourage users to  interact more in the community and become closer.   Why was the online status feature such a success? Because it encouraged more comments. Why was the “reply” feature a success? Why were minis a success? Why is the credit system working? You can tell by the features Xanga has been implementing that they value greatly the importance of comments to the functioning of the Xanga community. It’s largely one of the aspects of Xanga that most makes Xanga stand out in its little niche of the internet.

So I’d like to suggest a rather obvious feature that I think would work very well along the same lines:

    Blog Replies

How would it work?  Well it’s really a rather simple idea. Imagine you are wandering through Xanga and you come across an entry that inspires you to write not just a small couple of sentences but a whole essay or a whole presentation in reply. You’ve got a lotta things to say about this! And what’s more you want others, your subscribers and friends to *read* what you have to say about it.

Right now what are your options?  One option is to leave a crazy long comment expressing all your ideas. Chances are… nobody will read your reply. Maybe the person who wrote the blog will, but passerby’s probably won’t take the time.  What’s more your giant reply disrupts the flow of conversation, clutters the comment history and generally just annoys people.

Or you post your own blog entry about it. Here you don’t disrupt the comments on the initial blog, but your entry is completely disjoint from the original. And chances are nobody who read the original would ever come across your discussion. Even the person who wrote the original entry them self!  And users who follow your blog don’t read the original either.  So you have to post a link on your blog entry back to the original, explaining that you are replying. And then you have to leave a comment on the original with a link to your new entry.  And people look at you weirdly for leaving a link as your comment. Most are too lazy to follow it. Maybe you solicit the original writer and that person endorses your entry and writes about it in his or her blog which gets people to read it. But even then, it’s a lot of work.

Blog Replies automate this whole process of dual linking between separate writers blog entries. Basically you’d have a “blog reply” button you can click to reply to a blog entry instead of comment. When you click this button you get the standard blog entry editor and you can write your own full blog entry. That entry appears on YOUR blog with a link on it pointing back to the original entry to which you are replying. And then on the entry you are replying to there’d be a special section that shows the Blog Replies that have been made to this entry.

    Actually…

    Xanga Already Has Blog Replies

But only in a very specialized area. The Featured Questions.  These are blog entries in a special blog and everyone who “answers” the question is effectively writing a blog reply to that entry. And it links back to the original.  So probably the easiest implementation of Blog Reply would be to somehow generalize the Featured Question system. Basically every blog entry would have an optional link that says “blog reply”  much like the “answer it” link on featured questions. And then there’d be a line at the bottom of the entry you write that says “I am replying to <entry name> by <user>. You can too!”  Or something like that.

That’d be the simplest implementation.  Personally I’d make it a more comprehensive system. Indeed, I’d make it so there’s a section at the bottom of each blog entry with a scrolling list of all the blog replies that have been made to this entry. Each blog reply would appear as a uniform size horizontal “banner” like running across the screen.  The list would show: the profile picture of the replier,  the subject of the reply,  a couple of line snippet of the reply entry, and a link to the replier’s blog entry.   It would also show eprops left and mini’s left since you’d still be able to do that in a blog reply just like you could for any comment.   Also possibly it might show whether the replier recommended the original entry and/or the number of recommendations and/or star rating of the blog reply.

Then on the other end there’s similarly be a banner at the top of the blog reply entry on the replier’s blog that shows vital statistics about the original entry to which you are replying with a link and the profile picture of the original writer’s post.

Basically what I’m talking about is a very visible way of cross advertising each other’s sites while allowing a conversation to “branch” out into other people’s blogs.

I’d also make it so that in the subscription browser a blog reply entry shows the entry to which it is replying, and every entry that has blog replies shows also a list at the bottom of the links of all blog replies made to it.

Lastly I’d create certain user controls to prevent problematic situations. First, just like with comments a blogger can manage the blog replies to his or her own blog.  He or she can’t delete the reply as that’d be like going into someone’s blog and deleting their entries, but he or she could delete the blog reply link so that the reply entry is no longer advertised on their blog.

The only other control I’d create is the ability to optionally disable or enable blog replies independently of comments.  That means you could write an entry that allows blog replies but not comments, comments but not blog replies or both or neither. Featured Questions could then be reimplemented as Blog Replies with regular comments disabled.  And Xanga could implement other new features like Featured Questions in much the same way.

One last possible control would be to allow restricted list blog replies. Like “protected” you could have an entry where only certain users specified by the writer are allowed to post blog replies. I think that control would probably be more trouble than it’s worth to implement but it’s definitely a possibility to keep in mind.

    And that’s pretty much it.

One particularly good application of Blog Replies that a lot of Xangans in this day and age would be particularly interested in I think would be the ability to use them in Contests.  It would make contests a lot easier to create.

For example let’s say I wanted to run a contest called “Xangan Philosopher King”.  All I’d have to do is create a post saying “Think you got what it takes to be Xanga’s next philosopher King? If you do submit your entry by Blog Replying to this Post!”  And that’s all I gotta do. I don’t have to get messages sent to me. I don’t have to edit and keep re-timestamping my entry personally making links to all of these blog entries of the contestants. That’d all be done for me right through the Blog Reply system!  People who want to read through the contestants entries just read through the blog replies. Easy!

And say some bonehead comes along and posts a blog reply that says “Your contest is a simple and elegant design. Come visit my site so I can tell you  how to lead your life according to my own screwed up ideals.” Well I just peruse through the blog replies and delete the link to that entry and to any other blog replies that aren’t official contest entries. My contest maintenance would be a LOT easier wouldn’t it?

    Cool huh?

Similarly you can do all kinds of cool stuff through blog replies. You can run polls through blog replies. You can do sort of collaborative choose your own adventure stories with branching story lines. You can do “tagging” like occurs in deviant art (someone posts an entry with a task to complete, completes and says that “tags” others to reply and do the same). You can work on joint projects more easily using blog replies. The Xanga Team could implement a suggestions and ideas forum that works through blog replies. The possibilities are nearly endless. Users would find all kinds of ways to utilize blog replies to their advantage. And of course if users don’t like them they can just never enable blog replies for their entries. In fact that could be right there in their options screen an ability to disable all blog replies by default.

I must admit this idea is not *entirely* original. In addition to its roots in the existing featured question system, it also would be rather similar to Youtube’s Video Responses feature. Only, in my opinion it would work a lot better for blogs and way better for Xanga’s blogging system just because of the importance Xanga puts on comments. And since Xanga allows videos, pulses, and blogs, it becomes sort of a more powerful generalization of the Video Responses feature of youtube.

    Another Good Idea

What if not only could you blog reply to someone else’s blog, but you could also blog reply to someone’s comment.  One of the only problems I have with the current reply system is that everything is flat.  Nothing is segmented. That means that it’s very easy for a thread to get hijacked and go off on divergent tangents. With a more traditional forum threading system, tangents all fall into their own thread which other users who don’t care can ignore.

Blog replies to comments would enable this same benefit only in a manner that fits in more with the Xanga system. That is someone leaves a comment on your blog or on someone else’s blog and you have a lot to say in reply to it. Instead of hijacking the entire discussion about the original entry you Blog Reply. An entry appears on your blog and a small reply is placed in the original entry as a reply to the comment in question. And an email goes out to that commenter as usual saying someone has blog replied to their entry.  Then if the person you are blog replying to wants to follow up with the discussion they can go to your blog and leave comments. And anyone else interested in this side discussion can follow suit.

Between blog replies of this kind and the existing flat multiple entry replies I think you’d have a really powerful comment system that has all the benefits of a threaded forum and much more utility besides. It would, I think, make Xanga perhaps one of the most powerful discussion forums on the internet, if it isn’t that already.

    Interaction With Existing Systems

The last question to ask is how blog replies and blog comment replies would interact with existing systems. There are some possibilities. A blog reply could auto-recommend the original entry, having a message pop in the feed that says “<blah> recommended and blog replied to the entry <bleh>”.   Blog replies could show recommendations and overall star ratings as I described above as a sort of form of cross advertising. Blog replies could show up in the subscription browser and/or feed.  Maybe even a tree’d view could be used.

The hard question is how does this interact with credits?  Should blog replies give you or the person to whom you are replying a lot of credits or a small amount of credits or even no credits? The argument for a small or no credits is that you don’t actually want people abusing the system and “blog replying” everywhere. A low credit count could discourage empty idiotic blog replies. The argument for giving more is that blog replying takes more effort than regular commenting generally and it does add quite a big to the discussion when used correctly. It can also drive more traffic to the original site which is a big benefit. Experimentation I think would need to be used to determine the right implementation. It would depend a lot on how popular blog replies become once implemented.  But I think getting a credit bonus for writing blog replies at first would be a very good idea. It could also be used to give you a nice bonus for answering the featured question which would encourage more users to answer them.

    How About A Mod System

OK, one last last idea. What if users have even more fine tuned control over the blog replies placed on their blog to the point where they can control to what extent they are advertised by the writer. For example you can mod a blog reply up if you like it or down if you don’t like it. The ones you mod up appear higher up on the list of blog replies to your blog and stand out more. Hence again you can kind of prevent excessive abuse of the blog reply system by limiting the benefit users get from posting silly or irrelevant blog replies.

In a very real sense blog replies serve two very powerful purposes for the Xangan community. They would strengthen and empower the existing comment systems adding more flexibility and opening up new possibilities. And second they would encourage more actual *blogging* on Xanga at the same time. Users can effectively be blogging and commenting at once  No longer would you have to choose on which of these two activities you should most spend your time.

    Your Thoughts?

Good idea? Bad idea?  Comment. Reply. Star. Eprop. Recommend. Message. And/Or Blog Reply with your thoughts or opinions! I’d love to hear them.

Comments (195)

  • Hmmm…..I like. Definitely. It could work. You should suggest this to the Xanga Team, maybe.

  • LOVE this idea!

  • Sounds like a good idea to me. It would definitely make the whole contest thing easier.

  • I think this is a good suggestion.  It encourages networking.

  • I love it!

But the blog reply to a comment is unnecessarily cluttered. And I wouldn’t have the list of blog replys under the entry, instead it would be on the right hand side. aka, Tags, Minis, Who Recommended, Who Replied, Who gave the eprops.

But other than that it’s great!

  • Yeah, a mod would definitely be a good idea!

  • You are just beyond incredible dude. This is an awesome suggestion.

This is seriously a fantabulous idea. This has to happen…

  • Wow…I could write a long comment here…or maybe use a blog reply as a response…hmmm…yes…this should go to thexangateam for further study…it would be cool.

  • I love this idea! As the pixie said, it’s fantabulous!!! :)

  • You should get lifetime premium. I will start a petition!

  • Definitely like your thinking. :)

  • okay, i know that was suppose to be simple and easy, but honestly…. you lost me. and though tempted i might be to re-read it, i’m not. i must be old school or something. ah well. i’m sure it’s a good post, though, and with a way to beat whatever system that you feel you’re talking about. i just don’t wanna read more. i think it’s a mental thing, or lack of thereof. i’m the kind of guy who opens a tv box, throws the manual into the corner…after taking out the batteries, remote and any accessories, and only if i can’t figure out the superficial levels of functions, only then do i read the manual. and usually after a few years, if ever. I think i’m just a simple kind of guy. but great post, i’m sure.

  • its a really simple fix thats used in many other places (youtube being the simplest form of it i can recall offhand). good call.

  • I think a delinking option would be better than moding up and down the list.  The ability to say, this wasn’t about what I was talking about, go away.

I agree this is the most social of social networks on the market.

  • @MayoKetchup - ha yeah i guess I could have written it much shorter. Basically I am suggesting that Xanga implement the equivalent of youtube Video replies for blogs. Everything else is just explanation and justification for it and brainstorming ways it could be implemented.

  • @The44thHour - i was also thinking it might be possible to make the location configurable in the theme. You can make it appear right left, top or bottom, below comments or above comments.

But I’d want it to stand out more than the minis and eprops. Nobody hardly notices those. I’d make it a separate bar if I put it on the side.

@Edgebreak - I agree with you on both points.

  • wow! I hope some of these ideas will be realized into reality some time in a not too distant future.

  • It is a very good idea. And it would make Xanga so much more efficient! Hopefully it will be implimanted

  • i think i’ll blog to this blog after i comment in this reply to the blog i just read after commenting on another blog.

  • Must…recommend!

I love this, because I hate those massive 42 paragraph comments you get that are like…why did you write all that out?  I’m not gonna read it!

I hope this gets featured, or at least the Xanga Team takes it into serious consideration!

  • It is a pretty good idea. And it would help raise the intellectual level of xanga a bit.

Personally, I find the minis and contests completely obnoxious. I don’t think they’re playing to their target audience with those (or they’re confused about who their target audience is.) It’s the type of thing that people 10 – 15 years old would find really great, but really dumbs things down for the rest of us. Very few people high school age and younger are going to Blog. That’s why they have myspace and the like (if you’ve noticed, the blog function on those sites go larger under used, and the few that do use it are usually in the older set.)

Most people on Xanga these days are 18+. The Xanga team should focus more on that age bracket and less on the younger. It should be more about stimulating ideas and discussions and less on popularity contests and add ons that are cute to look at but serve no real function. I think the recommend, pulse, and reply features were all great ideas to help achieve that end. And the feature your suggesting would actually really help as well.

Also, I bet people would answer the featured questions more often if they afforded more than just one word answers (or 3 sentences tops). I mean, I’m sure you’ve noticed I’m pretty verbose. If I can’t even think of more than a word or 2 to say then it’s probably just not a very good question (in terms of inspiring blogs, anyway.)

  • @elvesdoitbetter - jeepers! then i AM a minority along with 30 thousand other teens…

  • OMG FEETCHERD WEBBLOGGAGE!  *cough*  I mean, YOU’VE BEEN FEATURED!!!

  • I got tired of reading it and having to highlight half of the blog because I can’t read it over the picture very well and…so ya…it sounds like a great idea but maybe you should make it a bit more short, simple, and to the point.

  • Woot! Featured again! =D Blog replies would be good, but to comments would probably make things a bit cluttered.

  • I totally agree with you. Comments get too long and off topic (guilty!) What else are we to do when the situation merits more than a comment but less than a disjointed blog?

I think this is a fabulous idea. I’m not sure how much work it would take to implement, but if it’s within reason I sure hope the Xanga Team takes your advice. I can think of three instances in the past week alone where I could have had one stellar blog reply.

  • Ahhhhhh! What a truely AWESOME idea!!

  • Oh, gosh, blog replies would be awesome! I actually did a ‘blog reply’ to a featured post once, and mine became featured for it! I was so shocked, like, ‘Wow!’ I thought no one would read it except the person that wrote the original post! But, blog entries would make it much easier for everyone who may not get featured for responding to a blog, since not all good blogs are featured. Thankfully, this one was!

    ~~Mary~~

  • @LydJaGillers - I agree! I had to highlight the entire post too because it was hard to read. But I got the gist of what nephyo wanted to say. It might be a good idea – it depends on how it’s implemented.

  • I’m definitely liking the blog replies idea. Great post! =)

  • What ?? Xanga doesn’t make me feel “closer” to anyone on here I fucking hate 99% of the insipid pretentious tossers on here. I fucking hate that thing that shows people when I’m live. How about a bit of privacy. No didn’t think so. Yada yada yada fuck I really couldn’t be bothered reading the rest. Try to keep your entries to LESS than the length of a small novel. Cheers. Fuck…could anyone be arsed to get to the end ? If they say yes they’re either lying or a masochist.

  • That’s a great idea!

  • I like it — I hope some of these get implemented.

  • xanga sometimes helps those who are down and uninspired.

  • Wow that’s awesome!

(Totally non-substantive comment meant to feign interest)

    lol

How often do we get those? hee…

  • @LydJaGillers - Sorry!  I didn’t know I was going to get featured, and it happened to coincide with when I was experimenting with a new theme. Is this any better? Thanks!

  • @VersaGratis - sorry! Is this any better?

  • @a_life_bizarre - nice. you rock! thanks for the kind, creative, unique, and oh so polite comment! You’re one of the people who make Xanga so great! ^_^

  • @nephyo - Thank you! Much better And let’s see what Xanga does about your idea

  • heyyyy! congrats on getting featured, again!

  • weird! i was just thinking about blog replies! great entry =]

  • Whoa — total Blogland genius is happening here. I was just thinking today that I wanted to post a blog regarding a post I read today, and thinking what a pain in the butt it is to have to do that… but it takes a genius like you to configure an entire foolproof system for how it would work. Amazing.

As for it being based off of the Featured Question — I think it has been established (at least in my head) that the Featured Questions tend to be… what’s the word I’m thinking of? Uninteresting to me. There. That’s not offensive ;)

Anyways… how far are you willing to take this? I took the time to read the entire technical essay you posted; I had better see some results from this! :D

About your layout — very nice. Although, I liked the old one equally. I vote: both! ;)

  • How much time did you spend thinking about this? Because it’s incredibly detailed. I would definitely put my vote in for it. I don’t know how many times I’ve begun a simple one-line comment and ended up with fifty lines that I then copy over to my own blog which, as you stated, mostly never gets read.

  • I thought up the blog replies thing about 3 years ago. I first did it on the Novelle365 xanga when I was on as squeakysoul. I’ve even seen other blog posts complaining about those who do that but the original idea was to establish a sort of blog etiquette/unbroken link of content where one blogger literally inspires the next blogger. The comment replies thing, as far as I know, is all new.

  • this is a VERY smart idea.
its just one of those things that goes overlooked, i guess

  • This is quite the idea. I could see plenty of people using it. In fact, without this function existing, I’ve stumbled across a few “Response” blogs, and more often than not, they are more intriguing than the writing that inspired them.

I hope xanga takes your idea into serious consideration.

    Cheers,

    Taylor

  • This entry sucks.  The worst entry I’ve read in my whole life.

    I’m kidding.  It’s awesome.

  • Definitely a great idea. Too often I wanted to respond with an entire blog rather than just leave a comment, and I end up dancing around the current infrastructure rather than thinking of solutions.

I think it’s hilarious that many ppl who probably haven’t read many of your prior works automatically comment about it’s length. It’s an awesome shock factor, and I think you should keep posting lengthy ones occasionally cuz that’s one of your signature traits.

Of course you would be the one to suggest “Xangan Philosopher King”. Hah! Love it.

  • great idea…a lot of people are probably inspired by other user’s posts…

i think this system would work great

  • awesome post!!

  • The rest of the blogosphere has had this for years, in the form of trackbacks – but you still get points for thinking about it :)

  • You’re right about how the xanga community literally revolves around commenting.  Some users to whom I am subscribed disable the comments feature and it annoys me a lot.

  • Something like “Blog your reply!” at the bottom near the “Recommend” link would be good. Also, a module near the “Who recommended?” module titled “Who replied?” would be perfect. I’ve actually replied to a couple blogs myself. I usually just mention that I was inspired by such-and-such a blog to write what I did. All that other stuff (links in the comment section, and soliciting the original poster) seems a bit of an obvious cry for attention. Great idea, anyway.

  • @triple_spiral99 - Yeah! Why post something out in public if you don’t want the opinions of others? Make it private if your going to disable feedback!

  • I think it is super smart and would be a great addition to the site. And I would have to agree with some that maybe they should get rid of the minis and contests, b/c it seems like they really have no purpose and get a little bit annoying.

  • you have this well thought of. it could work.

  • I like your suggestions. I know what you mean, too!  It’s like
if noone comments at your site, you can never be a “feature” in Xanga.
I have a Black Entertainment blog and most of the hits I get is from
    stuff I do on MySpace…

Not that I don’t appreciate my loyal Xangites, but I wish that I could get the word out better…

    Peace.

  • Sounds good to me! I’ve been hit by the inspiration stick from a couple entries and had to resort to adding “Re: Whatever” as my title. Or leaving it as a comment with some note like “May turn into full entry”.

It could kind of work like the YouTube reply video feature, right?

  • this is a very well thought out plan…the Blog Reply sounds like a very good idea.  It could definitely work.

  • Brilliant idea! I love it. Xanga team, I’m really looking forward to this “blog reply” feature!

  • @TenderVoid - 30,000 ain’t so bad. 10,000 less than the number of students at my college. Only .0009% of the population of the U.S.

Also the number of votes it would have taken to keep Bush out of the White House last election. Which is irrelevant to this discussion but interesting food for thought.

  • @vwagenjetta - Well technically I’m only half-complaining.  If these individuals made their posts private, then I’d have nothing to read, lol.

  • You’re right…….through and trough right………

  • This is an excellent idea!

  • Cool! What a great idea! :)

  • pretty cool :]
hope these ideas turn into reality soon!

  • It’s a good idea, and I’m all for it so long as they’re able to work out an option so that my subscritions page isnt filled with replies.  It’s a feature that could be abused very fast and easily.  I personally never had a problem with leaving really long comments, and if someone wanted to make a blog entry about a blog entry and link back to the original blogger, I dont see why they dont just go ahead and do it since the tools are already there, it’s not a feature that really needs to be implemented per se.

Also, on a semi-related note, I preferred it when the Featured Question section had comments enabled.  That way, I could answer the question and if I wanted to read other people’s responses I could just go back there and read anyone’s I wanted without having to waste a blog entry and my subscribers’ subscription space with something I know they and I didnt necessarily want to consider “blog” material.

  • i can see where you got your banner from

  • Oh my goodness, what a mouthful. You’ve got some great ideas there; you should definitely work for the Xanga peeps.

  • What I’m trying to figure out is HOW do you people get so many comments?  I barely know any of my own friends that are on xanga.  I still use it for journaling and putting my creative works, but I really want to push them forth and I don’t know how on this site.  You are spot on when it comes to comments.

  • Well, check out the Featured One… =;)

RYC from ages ago… sorry I didn’t get back to your comment when you made it, I have been busy, distracted, etc., etc. To make a comment short- the video game I’m intent on doing well with right now is the Bubble Town app on Facebook. =XP I need a new Katamari game….

  • @SerenityHalo - write good posts on a somewhat regular basis the go forth and comment your little ass off on any blog you stumble upon. become a regular replier. then you’ll start getting your name recognized snd hopefully become a trafficed blog yourself. keep fighting the good fight and maybe you’ll get lucky and be featured. then *presto* oodles of comments.

  • Interesting ideas! I hope Xanga team reads this and takes them on.

  • I would agree with you.

    http://www.carpopo.com/

  • I really really hope that the creators of Xanga take the time to read this blog post so that they can make all your ideas come to life…honestly it sounds absolutely amazing!

  • you’re cool for writing so much about a good suggestion. : D

  • Too bad the Xanga team isn’t going to pay you for this great idea. You just gave it away!

  • Idea’s awesome

Props to you for making Xanga an awesome-r place than it already is!

  • That was the longest blog ever! But they all sound like good ideas!

  • Could we have multiple protected lists as well? I love your ideas, btw. I would LOVE multiple protected lists ’cause sometimes I just want one person to read a certain entry.

  • @elvesdoitbetter - well as far as I know xanga itself can’t be blamed for the contests as that’s a spontaneous user created phenomenon. And I think it’s fine if that’s what people want to do. It’d be nice if there was a way to collect all contest related posted together though so that a user can opt to ignore them if they don’t care. Sort of a joint subscribe/block feature. Maybe contest organizers should make better use of blogrings.

Minis are actually not that childish imo. micropayments are big news on online world and facebook gifts have shown they appeal to people in a large age range. I’m not fond of the implementation of xanga, but it does encourage comments so I sort of get why they did it that way. I just think minis need to be more interesting.

FQs have issues and although blog replies would help I think… I think there’s a lot more that needs to be done but those will be thoughts for some other Tuesday.

I absolutely agree with you that xanga should be focusing on encouraging interesting *writing* and feedback. That’s also a large part of what makes Xanga standout and makes it appeal to the writers and thinkers of every age group.

  • @saxy_grrl - ha! seems like the ideas been floating around lately. I hope they implement it exactly as I described or even better and if Xanga Team has any questions for me I’d happily answer and make suggestions. But I’m thinking the ball’s in their court now. Seems like there’s quite a bit of interest though!

@JessicaAshley7 - actually I first thought about this like seven months ago. heh. it takes me a long time to get around to writing up some of my ideas. lol. But I guess that’s why they end up so detailed when I do write them up. I’ve got tons more too.

@WomanOfLight - i thought about a psuedo implementation piggy backing off the existing comment system via user-convention and i guess with enough support the community can implement that with ease. But I like the idea of building it into Xanga itself as a feature. I think it can be a very powerful and useful feature that would make Xanga stand out.

@moonlitsage - heh yeah it’s kinda funny when people say this entry is “long”. man they’d better not subscribe then cuz this is only medium sized at best for me. ^_^

  • @HeartOfPandora - @resilient_raindrop - Thanks! Amazing isn’t it?  I can’t believe this was featured. lol.

@fullmetalbunny - thanks! You know… blog replies would work great for the Xanga Saga too wouldn’t it? I mean you can each blog reply to the last entry creating an unbroken chain of story telling OR you could have one index post to which you all blog reply so nobody has to go through and keep creating the table of contents.

Katamari Damacy is GREAT! I’m going to try out this Bubble Town app. I’ve never heard of it.

@vwagenjetta - I think your implementation would be pretty good too. Personally I like the idea of making the blog replies stand out more so it’s sort of more like cross-advertising. But whatever people want most is fine I guess.

@yakky - haha! That’d be awesome. But my current boss wouldn’t like it I think and I just took this job! And I live in the wrong part of the country now. Maybe some day! ^_^

    @iknowHimdou - heh. I’ve done longer actually…

@GazeLe - I’ve wanted multiple protected lists for a long time too! That’d be a great idea!

@ElliottStrange - lol. It’s not that original, and I certainly don’t want money for it. If it makes my xanga life easier and more fun I’d consider that *more* than sufficient payment! And all the ideas on this blog are free to take as far as I’m concerned.

  • That is a great idea.

  • @nephyo - Oh, that was intended in jest. I apologize for not making myself understood.

  • Some of the suggestions are great!  I especially like the one about having some “meaningful” discussions.

Maybe the questions could be a little more mature and not so geared to the teenager set. I’d say at least 50% are geared for the really young set.

The matrix this site is using is different than other sites. I think it’s a nice change and I have already met some interesting people.

I hope the site managers look at your suggestions;they are certainly worthwhile.

  • hey u’ve got reli nice ideas!!! i love the blog reply idea; just like the video reply on youtube, right?

  • I just can’t believe I read through your whole post.

  • very insightful. comments!

  • @nephyo - Yeah, that would be a nice little feature, kind of next to the reply button… you can already do it pretty easily by simply creating the blog post and linking it in the original blog post’s comment section. There could also be a sort of tag cross-ref which could be done as well. Anyhoo, this is the entry in which I originally did a blog reply, I actually bumped it up a few weeks ago when I was low on content, but if you see the first few comments are all from 2005… if only Xanga had paid attention to me then! The story could have been quite a bit different.

  • Sounds good to me.

  • Haha…I didn’t know, that xanga had a comment reply feature…until a week ago. Only because it’s so new!

I like how comments are used as a great importance on xanga. Not a lot of networking sites use the comment factor, the way xanga does. That proves why I’m still on here.

But, I see you points as well. :)

  • Xanga is the shit man. 5 years loyal, and I know someday I’m gonna buy lifetime. :)

  • @nephyo - Ah, I thought Xanga was behind one of the contests a little while back. I guess I was mistaken. I don’t really care about what other people do on their blogs until it turns into shameless self-promotion on *my* blog. I hate when I get comments saying “OMG, cute layout! Don’t forget to vote for me at [some stupid contest] !!!^.^!!!” Ya, thanks for nothing loser. I wasn’t going to vote for anybody, but now I’m going to go find out who’s up against you and vote for *them* just because they didn’t spam my blog! But I’m getting wildly off topic.

The concept of minis are not childish, but the way xanga has them definitely is. Just look at them! They look like the kinds of things I would have had on my binders and notebooks in 3rd grade. If they had funny, interesting or entertaining ones I’d be all for it. Instead we have these wide-eyed sparkly pastel cartoon things that appeals to no one over the age of 15.

  • You seem to have A LOT of great ideas, good thinking! I like the ideas.

  • I love the idea of blog replying.  Good one!

You might want to review your usage of to, too, and two, though.

  • @Viewtiful_Justin - lol. one of my friends would get along with you great. if I had my way though there’d only be one word for all three concepts and it’d be spelled: “2″.

  • Can’t a blogger write his own reply as a post on his xanga, then link it in a comment in the xanga which inspired the reply? I’ve done that several times before. It’s not a lot of work, and making a special “feature” that does this automatically doesn’t seem necessary to me.

  • @sonnetjoy - Yes you can. The main difference here is that the Original Post would link back to the replies in a special visible section.

  • @nephyo - I don’t understand. Aren’t links in comments visible?

So the difference would be that there would be a sidebox, like the Tags, where all the links for the replies would be grouped together?

  • @sonnetjoy - yeah all blog replies show up in a separate section separate from normal comments. like the video responses feature of youtube.

  • TL;DR… j/k Seems you have some good thoughts, then it would appear that a everything would be about comments and then who would write a blog anymore… hahaha. But very true nonetheless about the Xanga being about the comments and the features for commenting.

  • @The44thHour - dude, u just wasted 1,000 credits!!!!

  • Those are good ideas…

  • @The44thHour - ohhh wow!!! i wish i had as many credits as u…ur really something

  • @Craig1616 - It took me a long time to build them up.

  • My blog is all about quality than quantity. As such, I rarely get more than 20 comments over the lifetime of an entry. These are good ideas but they apply more so for popular blogs.

  • @The44thHour -  just messin with u dog…. i can be annoying sometimes, but it makes life more interesting… hey come check out my site and maybe we can be friends

  • Yeah cool ideafor xanga  =P

  • That’s a really good idea I completely agree.

  • The blog reply system is a great idea, it’s so true that many of us are inspired by others post, yet most will never see them unless you’re lucky enough to be featured. I also think the mod idea is good, too. =]

  • yea thats great… a sense of community… a wonderful thing based on the false assumption that the community is intelligent..

  • Hmm…the notion of a contest feature sounds very interesting…

  • That is an awesome idea! Hopefully they can implement this eventually…

  • I hope someone reads this, or knows how to get this to the developers.

I would really like a “xanga classic” with a barebones blogging feature. no bullshit, none of this “xanga mini” crap, or super-fancy stuff. i just want to post a blog on the same blog ive been using for a long time, or maybe have a “download previous posts” function so I can save my past entries to archives and go somewhere else that offers what i’m looking for.

  • If I hear the phrase “blog reply” one more time today, I’ll fucking kill someone.

  • @squire - Have you ever checked out the settings menu? You can turn off minis, comments, stars, recommendations, just about everything. And, with a premium membership, you can elect to archive your posts, which is just a fancy way of saying “download them to your computer.”

  • Killer Idea doode. Totally suggest it to the xanga team!!!

  • I definitely think blog replies are a good idea! I find myself writing comments and then editing them over a few times because they get WAY too long!

I also agree that if you made blog replies to comments, or comment replies, they should be added as threads ( I think that’s what they are?) In other words, all the replies to a comment would go right under that specific comment and be minimized unless I were so inclined to click on it and open it up. That way it would declutter comments a little more!

I don’t know if that was what you meant but that is a good idea too! Recommended!

  • @tj187,

thanks, i’ll def check that out :)

  • Saw this when a friend recommended it, and just wanted to say I think it’s a neat idea! =)

  • It sounds simple enough.  And, I think it’s a good idea.  But the big question here is, how easy would it be to implement the idea?

  • I like the idea of Blog Replies.

  • For me personally…I don’t blog so people can read and comment.  I blog for myself.  It’s like an online journal.  So I don’t care so much for the whole networking thing.  It’s a pretty good idea though for those who do like to get out there and discuss ideas.

  • get off xanga’s nuts….

just kidding, you can stay on them if you want.

  • I was prepared to come down here and tell you how amazing your post was..that I read the whole thing, honest to goshhhh, and that this should happen, because I’d be more likely to respond to somebody’s post than to leave a comment, but I’m pretty sure all of thoe other thousands of comments have done so. I don’t want to copy. So…
    Great work.
    Great focus.
     =]

    Zoom zoom…

  • The Xanga Team should offer you something. ;)

  • Those are some awesome ideas, I hope they’re put into place.
    -Dylan

  • this sounds like a great idea! a more generalized version of a featured question.. like there could be a featured question but still be able to reply to other blogs in that sense too

  • This is such a complete proposal. How can the Xanga Team not take it? But I agree that the problem is with the credits. Maybe users only get credits when the users whose blog entries are replied mod up the blog replies?

Oh, and blog-replying to comments seems a little over the top. But it’s not a bad idea.

  • u did good here, very nice indeed.. made a fan out of me. ;)

  • Every suggestion you made sounded great. I hope the xanga team really looks into all of this.

  • ENTER THE “SUMMER BOOTY” CONTEST!!!

  • I think you have an excellent idea, very clearly stated, very nice details and an attractive layout.

  • You are SO right about the blog replies! A link on every blog page that said “Blog Reply” that functioned like the Featured Question would be awesome!!! I totally agree.

  • What an idea! I like it!
I was just thinking about something like this the other day :)
Good job on the post and a brilliant idea that I wish will soon become a reality.

  • Actually, I’ve done this commenting or replying with my own blog thing, and once it’s worked out well (thought I made a new friend but it just became an activity inside the whole “forum”) and once I wanted to clobber the person because although they claimed to be super naiive, they sure hit people with their words in a way that would have received a nice slap across the face from me (that one was more amusing that anything). I think people would actually love to have their blog replies to featured blogs to be publicized. That’s pretty much all it is for someone who has their blog on public (no offense). I don’t know, this place is just getting to invasive for someone like me (note friend lock). Good luck with your measure though. I’m sure congress (Dan) will consider it.

  • I like the blog reply idea, but I don’t know if it’s really pratical. I like how if you want to respond to something, you make a post about it, link back to the original article and then leave the Original Poster (OP) a comment saying “Hey, I responded to your entry HERE” where here is a link back to your site. That way your audience can go read the original (and maybe find a new blog to read) but at the same time the OP and perhaps some his/her followers will come to your site as well.

Also, I like the “old-fasioned” way of doing things because it can help get the link count up for Google and you have to make an effort to cite what you are reacting to, much like citing a source in a research paper.

Nevertheless, I think you’re on to something. Maybe if Xanga would just become Live Journal and use threaded comments…

  • This is a great idea!

  • I absolutely love this idea!  I can’t wait to see it happen.  Thanks for such a complete & detailed entry!

  • nice, you got featured!

  • what an excenllent idear!

  • So essentially, you are suggesting a feature that most other blogging engines have had for ages– trackbacks. Not to take away at all from your idea, I think it’s brilliant. It would be much like the youtube video reply feature.

  • I would love this! I mean, I think the people I sub to can attest to the size of my comments. lol But I think it would be better if this “blog reply” were placed in a separate module from the main posts. I belong to another social networking site, Tribe.net, where one can opt for a “recently commented” module. Though Tribe is more of a message board site as opposed to Xanga’s primary function as a blog, I think this idea could really take off here, especially for uber-commentators like myself.

  • You spend way too much time thinking about Xanga

  • I love the Blog Reply suggestion. Can’t wait for Xanga to implement that, with Credits of course!

  • @EminemsRevenge - oh you have NO idea.  I have many thousands more words written about xanga that I haven’t yet shared.

  • I have had instances where I have wanted this feature. I think its a great idea and hope Xanga will make it, or something similar to it eventually.

  • What stops people from being obnoxious and just pressing ‘blog reply’ and just leaving a comment because they want theirs read so badly? :p

  • Great idea, and something I feel has been lacking in the blogosphere for some time now.

  • I think this is a wonderful idea. I actually ‘blog replied’ to someone’s post yesterday. I didn’t post my link in their comments because my entry ended up being pretty mean, but the system you described seems pretty sweet!

  • Good idea, but this is getting way too complicated. What you’re suggesting is perpetuating the “popularity contest” that some Xangans already seem to have entered themselves in.

  • I’m on board with replies. The E-props are useless though…

  • NICE ONE

  • awesome idea! but this is xanga, they don’t like new features… except ones that take up space and make pages load even slower

  • @MayoKetchup - i get you totally… i got lost somewhere in the middle. it was a good post at the beginning..

  • I agree, and here’s two props for my comment, haha.

  • This is all too true and interesting. I wonder if anyone would actually go to my site because I actually commented.

  • @nephyo - Ahhh…yes, much much better.

  • i likes your eagle

  • I think is a good idea.. It would make contest easier,
and you can start a discussion thread without filling your comment box with long arguments.

  • Great Idea! (and i knew you before you were famous!) =)

  • Couldn’t agree more :p

  • me like the idea v.v

  • wow what a brilliant idea! you really thought this through :)

  • Annnnd, why hasn’t this happened yet?

  • Personally I don’t even know what the mini’s are for…I never use them…

    What are they?

  • @ughstupididiot - they are a way to give other people a message in the form of a small stylized icon that appears with your comment. To use them you have to spend credits.  It causes your name to appear in a different section on the bar on the left hand side, and the email notification sent says “You got a Mini” instead of “New webblog comment”. It’s also a way to transfer credits to someone since the person who gets the mini gets I think 1/10th the credits you spent on it.  It’s kinda similar to facebook gifts only really totally different.

Credits of course are just a micropayments architecture being integrated throughout xanga’s features.

  • @nephyo -  I see…. So it’s pretty much like giving props then…right?

  • Great ideas. And I bet the Xanga programmers have taken note. They are very responsive to our needs.

  • @ughstupididiot - yup. only “cuter”.

  • haha yeah I guess…

Another question… What is the ‘pulse’ for?

  • @ughstupididiot - ok the pulse is for super short “blogs” with limited text size. It’s Xanga’s answer to Facebook Statuses and the whole Twitter craze that is really popular amongst the young.  Pules can be easily updated by cell phone making them ideal for blogging on the go.  Personally I think they a re cooler than facebook statuses because people can reply to them easily and you can reply to the replies.

Basically though it’s just somethign where you can put something brief that you don’t want to put a full blog post about and you can make it stand out in a different place on your blog if you want, like how I have my latest pulse at the top of this blog.

  • @nephyo - Ic… So that requires internet on your phone right? I don’t think I would use it but it would come in handy if needed. :)

I gave you a mini!! it’s rainy here today…so I thought that would be a good one. haha!

  • here’s another comment, lol

  • i think this is a fabulous idea!!!

  • If I’m going to reply to a post that I’m really interested in, I almost always end up writing a really long comment, and then commenting several times, even if I inadvertently shift topics.
This would be very helpful in spreading traffic around xanga.  I think a lot of the recent features (notably, recommend and automatic “want to stay updated” messages when you visit/comment a non-subbed site) are designed primarily to increase the variety of traffic to everyone’s site, by getting everyone a little more involved in the community process.
This would be a great feature, and I would use it very often.

  • @nephyo - The problem with pulses is that comments on them have an obscenely small character limit (even smaller if you want to add a reply!)  There’s nothing I hate more than posting 4 comments just to express one idea.

  • @ughstupididiot - :) thanks for the mini! And for subscribing.  Yeah I think you need internet on your phone but I don’t know I never used the feature. I always have access to a computer so I’ve never needed to post from a mobile.

  • @la_faerie_joyeuse - that’s true it is sort of annoying, but I still like it better than not being able to reply at all.  also the char limit means reading pulse replies is fast and easy unlike reading blog replies. You can also always use text speech to speed up your reply :)

I think you’re right about the recent features spreading traffic around xanga. And I’m glad you like my suggestion! ^_^

  • The blog to blog reply sounds pretty epic imo. the bloggging to a comment doesn’t sound neccesary, but could be fun. and The ability to give a comment “+’s” and “-’s” sounds like a good one (see it on youTube alot).

  • Hmm, I think this would be a good idea.

  • Wow reading this made my head spin a bit, but I got the general idea. It’s a good idea.

  • Like the idea, but I stopped reading after the part where you explained how featured questions are already like blog replies. :p

  • fantastic ideas!we need to make the xanga creators aware of this a.s.a.p.!!

  • Ear is the little side of the heaven and earth. If you wear the right jewellery, it can make your entire face luster to be enlarged. First to estimate what kind of links of London earrings suit your face when choose. For example of me, my face is a little round, so those long earrings are not good looking on me. I like small and delicate links of london jewellery I don’t ask for style, but the color should be better. I have black, white, red, green, yellow and transparent diamond earrings. For those whose face is better, the choice is much more.
The style of earrings and necklace should match with the color. So that the triangle that above the neck be embraced.
Friends always said that I have many links of london and they are all beautiful. In fact, I just do that. Almost everyday’s jewellery with on repeat. But also remember according to the dress to choose the style and color.
