  • [short] Writing Assignment #1

EDIT:  I started a Blog Ring for this:
    Please join!

For the next few days or so I’m going to be doing these writing assignments. I got the idea from my good friend rianahntr‘s blog.  I thought it was a wonderful idea but I never got around to starting them until now. But I’m going to do my best to work on them diligently for the next couple of weeks.

If you like them, or the idea, please visit her and leave comments! She’s looking for feedback on her stories and ideas and suggestions for new stories. Plus they are fun and a great way to get the creative juices flowing for those of you writers out there. ^_^ So you should do them too! I’m told the way to do it is to make yourself do one every day or two.

If you do do them let me know and I’ll link you here so that others can read your stories and perhaps you’ll get more feedback from one another. We can all discuss them. If it gets popular maybe we can start a blog ring or something. Xanga Creative Writing Class or Introduction to the Short Story or something like that.

    OK Here goes:

Assignment #1: Tell a story in less than ten sentences.

Natalia was old beyond her years. She’d
lived more life in sixteen years than most people could in two life
times. And now every experience she had reminded her of a moment from
the past. Everyone and everything just seemed so sad and pathetic to
her; so unworthy of her attention. She found she couldn’t relate to anyone anymore. So when the men in blue came for her
and took her away she was not surprised at all. She’d seen it all
    before.

    Have Fun!

  • Hmm, this sounds like fun and like a nifty idea! I’ll go read hers next

  • So, according to the rules, one could tell a story in the form of a limerick!!!

  • @Legendairy - uh yeah I can’t see why not.

  • I’ll be reading hers and yours. Thanks for sharing.

  • Hm… I may join in on this party

  • Cool. I might want to try this.
    @Legendairy - Ooo.. Limericks. =D

  • This sounds fun…

  • EADIE <3!

  • Alright… I like your first draft. I would write it as this actually [hope you don't mind me doing this]:  Natalia was old beyond her years. And now every experience she had reminder her of a moment from the past. All the people she knows and everything she sees… it all seems sad and pathetic. She found that she couldn’t relate to anyone anymore. And when they came for her, Natalia wasn’t even surprised. She just looked at them and their blue uniform, and shrugged.

See the difference? I think there’s more flow in this take. The thing with creative writing, though, is you want to express as much as you can in such little amounts. Or big amounts I suppose if you were Tolkien. Man, he wrote a lot and his descriptions … well, he painted it in your mind so you can literally see it, you know? Anyways, thanks for writing your first assignment! If I were to grade this, I’d have to give you an A-/B+ …. something like that.

    *hugs*
I look forward to reading more, and I hope you do my other assignments as well!

    ~Mel

  • @rianahntr - Wow. Yours sounds so much better than mine.  Heh.  Well B+ isn’t bad for my first assignment I guess. I’ll keep working on it ^_^.  Assignment #2 is going to be nearly impossible for me. 10 words? Geez. But oh well I’m going to have fun working on these! Thanks for sharing them. :)

  • @nephyo -
@resilient_raindrop - There once was a soldier named Truit
Who pulled a grenade pin and threw it
Why he threw the pin  I wonder time and again
And that is how poor Truit blew it!

  • maybe i would try this too.. ;)

  • I like it. Very concise, to the point, and tells a great story!

  • I like the concept.  I don’t have a lot of time and/or talent for writing assignments…however, I have a suggestion…
I need some writing done for me to do a demo track for Voice over work.

  • @Legendairy - That was really cool. ^_^ Then again limericks usually are.  But I think these assignments are more about standard prose than poetry or song.

    @TigerIly - @resilient_raindrop - @purplepixiepoo - @freshbrain -  It is fun! I hope you all join in too! ^_^

@CanvasGray - Thank you so much! I think it needs some work but I’m glad it got across the point well. ^_^

  • I think I’ll join. =) but i’ll use my story account. The_blood_that_runs_thin then i can post individual chapters by the rules!!! =)

  • That sounds like a really cool idea, but I’m not sure I could limit myself like that…:/

  • Sounds interesting! I’m going to join them all! :) Thank you.

  • i’ll think about one—THIS is one of the best writing assingnment’s i’ve ever seen…alas, i have problems bringing in stories under 100K

  • @Lack_Therof - Hey give it a shot! It’s not as hard as it seems and there will be other assignments later on that let you write more.

@EminemsRevenge - lol. You’re like me then! I write an insane amount. But the purpose of these assignments is just to get the creative juices flowing and start stirring up some ideas. You should give it a try!

  • I really like i have bookmarked your internet blog. It seems to be very interesting. You should keep uploading more in future for all of us. Thanks For Sharing
