Al Gore is soooo FAT
My favorite internet meme/twitter meme is the new “Al Gore is Fat” meme.
I have no idea where this meme came from, but I think I glean the simple reasoning behind it if you can call it that. Basically, people noticed that over the last few years climate deniers have continuously resorted to the most extraneous ridiculous arguments to try and counter the sound science behind climate change. Arguments tended to revolve around the personalities of particular scientists or advocate and not about the science itself. Other arguments were of the “of course it’s not happening” variety and “human beings couldn’t possibly effect the earth’s climate!” type. The worst arguments went so far as to imagine some vast liberal conspiracy planning to maliciously promote climate change in order to raise your taxes!
Particularly remarkable of course were the people who often didn’t even bother to put forth an argument at all. Instead, rather than trying to engage the scientists they simply made fun of Al Gore’s weight gain and talked about his appearance, called him a liar and mocked him in a thousand different ways.
Of course all of this is besides the point. Al Gore could be a modern day Hitler and could be the fattest man on the planet and it wouldn’t make a lick of difference in terms of the veracity of the serious dangers of man made global Climate Change.
So progressives have recently fought back by mocking unintentionally ridiculous arguments with deliberately ridiculous counter-arguments. Hence whenever there is news or reports that demonstrate, yet again, that Climate change most likely really IS happening, they’ve taken to the Twitterverse to proclaim that it is proof! Proof positive! No, not proof of any of the theories of man made climate change. People don’t want to hear that crap! Nooooo! It’s proof that Al Gore is, in fact, quite FAT.
Obviously that’s something that Americans REALLY care about.
A variation of this simply declares the fact about the man made destruction of our environment and goes “But don’t worry! Al Gore is STILL Fat!” The idea being again that everything will be fine just so long as Al Gore remains fat because obviously nothing a fat man says should ever be believed by ANYONE no matter how many accredited scientists happen to agree with him. I mean come on, look at him! He’s so overweight! So everything will be fine. We’ll only have to worry about global warming if Al Gore miraculously loses weight!
At times I wonder how Al Gore actually feels about this meme. I hope he’s okay with it. I mean it’s good natured mockery for a good cause. Far better, I guess, than his weight being used by those who want to discredit his message and what he believes in. Still, it must be strange to search for yourself on twitter and find all kinds of references to your weight.
In spite of being overweight myself, I just find the whole thing hilarious. It’s sort of the perfect form of deliberate slightly subtle sarcasm. I think it captures perfectly the heart of the battle between the pro and anti-science movements in this country. One side, bases its arguments on facts and reasoning and effective functioning institutions. The other, cares far more about appearances.
So if it happens to be snowing, regardless of whether scientific models predict it or not, it doesn’t appear to be getting warmer on that day, so therefore global warming isn’t real. So if it happens to be that a couple of scientists appear to be fudging the numbers, it doesn’t matter whether or not a careful study or analysis determines that they weren’t in fact fudging any numbers. So because we human beings appear to be small compared to the size of the Earth it makes sense to say we can’t effect the climate of the planet no matter what scientists who have made it their life’s work to study the climate happen to say about it.
And just because it appears to be that Al Gore is fat, everything he’s ever said on the subject of global warming and climate change should be dismissed out of hand without study or scrutiny.
Analysis versus supposition. Facts versus appearances. Scholarship vs guessing.
Which side do you belong to?
We’re currently suffering from an extraordinary nation wide heat wave. This, of course, is no proof of anything by itself, no more than the heavy winter storms (actually arguably predicted by climate change) are proof that global warming wasn’t happening. But it doesn’t look good. Especially when it is combined with the numerous careful analysis of global temperature readings that continue to show a global trend in temperature that goes upward and a ten year temperature average that is higher than ever before. Not to mention studies that show how we seem to be increasingly hitting more and more localized temperature records and more of them being high records than low records. And on top of all that investigation after investigation after investigation have fully cleared all Climate scientists involved in the so called climategate scandal of wrong doings and fully re-affirmed and validated the science of climate change. Even so called smoking guns that were supposed to show that the IPCC report was inherently flawed were soon found fully erroneous and had to be retracted.
So what do you think?
Does Al Gore still look FAT to you?

“Al Gore could be a modern day Hitler and could be the fattest man on the
planet and it wouldn’t make a lick of difference in terms of the
veracity of the serious dangers of man made global Climate Change.”
Precisely. And that should be obvious, but it doesn’t stop critics from shifting attention away from the evidence with cheap diversionary tactics.
Thoughtful people deny global warming because it is a demonstrable hoax. The data was fabricated and the peer review process corrupted. Global warming and its associated cap and trade tax plan are just leftist ploys to increase government control over society. They have nothing to with earth climate.
Socialized medicine is the same thing. It has nothing to do with medicine and everything to do with government control. Same thing with Obama’s stimulus program. It had nothing to do with the economy and everything to do with spreading money around to loyal interest groups.
Liberalism is what it is. A big fat lie.
@chaospet - There’s a reason most politicians have to be attractive to get anywhere. News casters and rock stars too.
I wonder how all this makes Al Gore feel.
@striemmy - Yup
Fat people cause global warming. Does this mean Al Gore is a hypocrite and can’t be trusted? I think so. Stick to your arguments, men, being fat definitely takes away his credibility.
Note: I’m pretty neutral here, I just thought the article applied and wanted to share it.
But you’re missing the point. Al Gore is fat. FAT! Just like MICHAEL MOORE! It’s clearly a conspiracy, dude.
@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - You are a dittohead idiot. The “climate gate” scientists have all been vindicated. The cap and trade is only theory may only be valid if and when such legislation ever passes and judging by the way we didn’t get socialized medicine, fat chance of that ever happening.
By the way. I am a liar.
@I_Create - By that logic anyone who drives a car, uses air conditioning, eats meat, or eats plants that they did not grow themselves similarly lacks all credibility to discuss global warming.
Even scientists running their complex expensive computer models are creating so much CO2 emissions! None of their science can be trusted.
They are all contributing to the problem.
As are you and I while we type these messages. Clearly we can’t be trusted.
@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - Funny how you consider 97-98% of all actively publishing scientists working in the Climate Science field to not be “thoughtful people”.
“(i) 97–98% of the climate researchers most actively publishing in the field support the tenets of ACC (Anthropogenic Climate Change) outlined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and (ii) the relative climate expertise and scientific prominence of the researchers unconvinced of ACC are substantially below that of the convinced researchers.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_opinion_on_climate_change
Cap and Trade was the middle ground proposal supported by even Sarah Palin during the last election cycle. It’s a market based solution that liberals are willing to try but is hardly their preferred solution. It’s certainly not a scary liberal take over of anything.
@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - Thoughtful people deny global warming because it is a demonstrable hoax.

The data was fabricated and the peer review process corrupted.
Except that the scientists of climate-gate have been exonerated.
@nephyo - 98% of scientists publishing lies, is still a hoax. There is no global warming. Even the frauds who were caught read handed massaging the data admit that there has been no global increase in temperatures for the last 15 years.
@HappyLemming - They were exonerated by their own people! Big surprise! I’ve read the emails. They are public. Do I believe a pack of liars or their emails that demonstrate that they are liars?
@Casbahmaniac - You are a dittohead idiot. The “climate gate” scientists have all been vindicated.
They’ve all been vindicated by their own people! Fortunately all the corruption is public for anyone to read for themselves. It’s all in there emails.
@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - No, they didn’t. The problem is is the climate denier’s favorite year is 1998. Deniers base their data starting in 1998, one of the hottest years on record. If you start your graph that year, the temps appear do dip down, but never past 1997′s levels and from there they actually rise. What you have is climate scientists treating 1998 as a spike, an anomaly. From there it appears to never reach those levels and it hasn’t…that’s true. You have to go back a lot further to see the trend that climate science is looking at. The trend shows a steady trend (apart from 1998) of going up.
@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - BTW, Penn State is the university that vindicated the scientists. I don’t think Penn State is known for being a liberal institution.
@Casbahmaniac - Penn State is center of the hoax. Michael Mann of Penn State is the one who was in charge of falsifying the data. Putting Penn State people in charge of his case is like putting a fox in charge of the hen house.
Did you know that Mann received millions and millions of dollars in Obama stimulus money? Wasn’t the stimulus supposed to be for the economy? If you leftists had any intellectual honesty at all you would just barely begin to understand how pathetic your position is.
You’ve got your own people caught read handed lying, cheating and receiving public financed pay offs. Where’s your outrage?
@nephyo - Point proven, I can’t be trusted.
@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - Why would I be outraged that money went to science? Lots of money went to and still goes to waste on Abstinence Only sex education. Am I outraged? Sure a little. But, are you outraged by it? Probably not…because it’s your bullshit and to you, your bullshit expense is more important than my (percieved by you) bullshit expense. What is money went to make big ass fuck all guns for the military? Yeah, you’d be for that. You don’t see that as a waste of money. It’s an expense that will never see a return…not that these expenses ever require it.
Somehow I knew even before clicking on this what the comment box would look like.
I’d have to say that those who believe that global warming is not possible had better be correct. Those are some heavy stakes they’re gambling with.
@Casbahmaniac - Why would I be outraged that money went to science?
Because Michael Mann doesn’t practice science for one. For another, science has nothing to do with economic stimulus.
I was just listening to an old Obama speech that he gave explaining his economic stimulus. Eighteen months later nothing has changed except the bank accounts of Obama’s cronies.
@LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - Mann didn’t directly receive money from the recovery act. The National Science Foundation did. They got 3 billion. The economic stimulus kept scientists working as they rely heavily on grants. I did read a lot from both sides here. Most of the stories I read came from the right and didn’t report the entire story. They acted like, the recovery and reinvestment act wrote a check directly to Professor Mann. That’s not exactly the way it went down. IN actuality, Penn State was granted 700,000 and this was shared with the University Of Hawaii. Of THAT money, Michael Mann actually got 57,000 to be used over a three year period. 19,000 dollars a year.
You don’t want to hear that Global Warming exists (which actually wasn’t debatable until conservatives started digging in..just like they do on the subject of the Iraq war when asked if they thought Iraq was behind 9/11) . It does exist. The only debate that still arises is whether or not it’s man made. But, if you must know. The very people cited in all of the global warming skeptic websites are getting paid too. Only, they are getting paid by big tobacco, coal, and career oil people. The head of The National Center For Public Policy research is Dr. Tom Borelli. Now, NCPPR demanded Mann pay back stimulus funds in all of that phony outrage worked up in the wake of the climate gate scandal. Dr. Borelli, as manager of Phillip Morris Corporate Scientific Affairs department assured all of us that second hand smoke is harmless.
Then there’s the guy who supposedly disproved Mann’s hockey stick graph on climate change, Steve McIntyre. Steve McIntyre has a bachelors degree in mathematics and has spent his career in mining and petroleum industries. What does this have to do with the recovery act? Well nothing, but these are the people criticizing where the money goes and it seems to me that 19,000 bucks isn’t much to write home about, but when you inflate those numbers to be MILLIONS, yeah that sounds like something to be upset about. Who’s fudging their data now?
